This has let us achieve a consistent look, while still giving each model its own character and identity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ingenlath is chief of Volvo design, while exterior and interior design are headed respectively by Maximilian Missoni and Robin Page. These are the minds responsible for bringing the concept of Scandinavian design back into the automotive world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe started from the concept of functionalism laid down in the 1950s and \u201860s, adding technology and innovation to the mix, expressed clearly and logically but also with a measure of discretion, to ease the relationship between the human user and this design, which should offer pleasure and comfort\u201d says Ingenlath. This doesn&#8217;t mean doing away entirely with decoration, he stresses, but using decorative elements with moderation, taste and elegance: \u201cOur cars will never say \u2018look at me, I\u2019m a star\u2019. But even for the segment itself, say the designers at G\u00f6teborg, the new car represents a bold step forward in terms of style, materials and trim. In the front and tail in particular, much of the character of the V90 reflects the Estate Concept from two years ago. \u201cThis car \u2013 says a smiling Ingenlath \u2013 has two more doors and is longer (4.96 metres, ed.), but has the same spirit. It\u2019s a very elegant car, with class and style.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-4 nonhundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" front and tail \u2013 adds Missoni \u2013 we\u2019ve kept the promises we made with the Estate Concept.\u201d \u00d6rjan Sterner, who worked together with Missoni on the exterior, was more than happy to cite styling cues from the P1800ES coup\u00e9-wagon of the 1970s: such as the concave grille and the shape of the tail, which is neither upright, as on traditional Volvo station wagons, nor a clone of the styling choices defining so many other sportwagons. \u201cOurs is still an honest station wagon, with an angle to the roofline that makes it very elegant\u201d, says Missoni.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"fusion-clearfix\"><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"fusion-fullwidth fullwidth-box fusion-builder-row-6 nonhundred-percent-fullwidth non-hundred-percent-height-scrolling\" project by Tisha Johnson from the California studio, who then developed the design further at G\u00f6teborg with Louise Temin, under the guidance of Robin Page who \u2013 like Ingenlath \u2013 feels a strong connection with the spirit of Scandinavian design. \u201cWe wanted to give the materials used a sense of strength \u2013 explains Page \u2013 following the same principles already applied in product design and architecture.\u201d Even the use of leather and stitching \u2013 the domain of Ebba Maria Thunberg, who heads colour and trim \u2013 speaks of a design that is more than just form. \u201cAs in the XC90 \u2013 explains Page \u2013 we began from the dashboard, as it is the interface between the vehicle and the user.
