The sky is the real roof of a spider and that’s the name of the new Maserati’s roadster, MC20 Cielo (“sky” in Italian). Unveiled today in Modena, it was design in Turin at Centro Stile Maserati, headed by Klaus Busse. Tre project started just a few months after that of the MC20 coupé and the two cars were developed almost in parallel. “The challenge was to maintain the volumes and proportions of the coupe, even if the spider is a bit taller”, explained us Pablo D’Agostino, chief designer Exteriors Maserati.
The model is equipped with a state-of-the-art electrochromic (smart glass) transparent roof that can instantly be transformed from clear to opaque at the touch of a button on the central screen, thanks to the Polymer-Dispersed Liquid Crystal (PDLC) technology. The roof is also best-in-class in terms of thermal insulation and of opening and closing speed (just 12 seconds).
“We have totally redesigned the rear end, with the tonneau cover that replaces the backlight and the trident-shaped air outlets”, adds D’Agostino. The Maserati trident, however, is there and it’s quite evident, in the form of a printing on the tonneau cover.
New boomerang-style outlets are built into the additional side fenders: the extraction of hot air from the engine compartment is maximised by exploiting the effect of the flow that passes over the fenders, while the aerodynamic efficiency of the spoiler remains unchanged. The aerodynamically shaped B-pillar helps the air flow more cleanly over the surface, while the new rear air intakes with built-in aerodynamic deflectors optimise the direction and amount of clean air coming in via the engine intakes to cool the intercoolers.
The launch version of the MC20 Cielo features a new three-layer metallic colour known as Acquamarina, available as part of the Maserati Fuoriserie customisation programme. The interiors are covered in ice-colored Alcantara laser-cut with parametric designs, for an exclusive sporting ambience of great refinement.
The steering wheel is also lined in Alcantra, a finish that will also be offered as a standard for the MY2023 MC20 coupe, as well as other details (like the infotainment and wheel rims). Because we are talking about next year: the MC20 Cielo will be on sale starting from the first quarter of 2023.
