More than two decades have passed since the Nissan X-Trail made its debut back in 2001. Today, with the latest generation, the fourth in the model’s history, the Japanese SUV changes from all points of view. Larger in size and with a styling more in line with recent Nissan production, it brings to the road an all-new electrified powertrain called e-Power. This consists of a 1.5 gasoline engine that is not connected to the wheels but acts solely as a generator that produces energy which is then crammed into a small battery and sent to the wheels through one or two electric motors (depending on the version). In this way, the X-Trail always runs on electric power, with real advantages in terms of fuel consumption.
In addition to the powertrain, also the style has some novelties. Nissan’s designers headed by Alfonso Albaisa have worked hard to give the model its own character, while remaining faithful to the formal language inaugurated with the smaller Qashqai. In the front end, the large V-Shaped grille dominates the other elements while the headlamps are developed on two levels: the depth ones at the bottom and DLRs on top. In general, the massive design of the front end increases the X-Trail’s feeling of sturdiness, emphasized in the sides by the black plastic wheel arches, which give a more off-road touch to the model. And at the rear, the taillights echo the shape of the front lamps.
The cabin, which can accommodate up to seven passengers, is a successful combination of technology and fine materials. The dashboard, on which a variety of finishes meet, is dominated by the large 12-inch infotainment system screen and behind the steering wheel the digital cluster is customizable with different graphics. Four trim levels are available.
