Some light camouflage still covers the shape of the Volkswagen ID.7, the German manufacturer’s three-box electric saloon, which is set to debut later this year. The ID.7 features a digital design with unique paintwork: 40 layers of paint have been applied, some of which are conductive while others have insulating properties. Thus, as many as 22 areas of the bodywork can be controlled separately and are electrified under the top layer of paint, creating the effect of electroluminescence.
Like all other ID. family models, the ID.7 is based on the MEB platform. The advantages of the modular platform are short overhangs and a long wheelbase (2.97 metres), which bring great advantages on the inside. In the ID.7, this translates into the character of a luxury sedan with a feeling of great space on board. In terms of styling, the ID.7 follows the design language of the ID family. The sedan’s distinguishing features are its aerodynamic front section and sloping roof, both of which help to reduce energy consumption and increase range. Air intakes at the front guide the flow running down the sides towards the rear. They thus form an air curtain, which reduces turbulence and has a positive effect on range: Volkswagen claims around 700 kilometres on a single charge.
