While some designers are dabbling in science fiction drawings that pay homage to 1960s films, and others are preparing very interesting material experiments already on the agenda for the coming months, a different kind of design itinerary is also being drawn at the DS style center in Vélizy. More concrete and less visionary, but still very refined: “These standard offerings promote a modern idea of movement, all focussed on the pleasure of details and leathers”, says Thierry Metroz, head of design, commenting on the Ésprit de Voyage fittings just developed for the two larger crossovers.
These are themes already addressed by the brand, but they now rise to a new language and are ready to shape future implementations. To get an initial taste, the dashboards have an entirely unique graphic flair: a map of Europe radiating right from Paris. “It is applied to the natural upholstery using a specific technique, hot embossing with tools designed in-house. In this way we can rebalance the surface deformation from the very beginning while upholstering, preventing drawing alterations”, explains Vincent Lobry, head of the color&trim section.
The topographical stylistic motif, also applied to the exterior mirrors in a playful “wind-stretched” version, optimally matches the extensive use of grey leather, from the unprecedented Gris Galet for the DS4’s seats (with cockpit and part of the door panels in Gris Granite) to Gris Perle for the entire interior of its sister (again in association with the exclusive piping of the various mats). “We chose light and bright shades to promote well-being on long journeys”, continue the designers. Certainly, during the test drive one is fascinated by the quality and fragrance of the material, which at the time remains completely authentic and does not indulge in ecologism of any kind.
The Ésprit de Voyage also inaugurate the series of Collections, i.e. special editions intended to rotate as in fashion. This first operation is complemented by additional subtleties, such as Noir Brillant exterior details, a select range of already familiar body colours and 19-inch wheel rims (Cannes on DS4 and Oyama on DS7), but reinterpreted with matte grey portions. While awaiting the spectacular innovations announced starting in the summer, the more hedonistic customers can consider themselves gratified. Also because the optional extras include both front seats heated, ventilated and massaging: how else to best express the spirit of travel?
