Lexus presented at Milan Design Week “Shaped by Air”, the installation by New York artist and architect Suchi Reddy, founder of Reddymade Architecture and Design. For the occasion, until April 23, the prototypes of the four winning projects of the Lexus Design Award 2023 and the new Rz 450e, the brand’s electric SUV built on the Toyota group’s e-TNGA platform, will also be on display. Both the installation and the Lexus Design Award express the overall theme of shaping the future.
The artist Suchi Reddy, after the preview at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Miami (ICA Miami), during the Miami Art and Design Week last year, has thus created for the Milan Design Week an elegant and light work of art that is an expression of sustainability, innovation and excellence, fundamental elements for Lexus. “Shaped by Air” celebrates a shared commitment to human-centered, zero-emission and flawlessly crafted design. Although at first glance it may seem abstract, the work is a scale interpretation of the Lexus Electrified Sport, shaped by light and with vibrant green leaf shapes that suggest movement through nature. For the Milan presentation, the forms of this work made of recycled/reused consumables will be suspended from the ceiling like a sculpture, recalling the shapes of the vehicle’s design and the cutouts of Henri Matisse.
As every year, Lexus chose Design Week to celebrate its passion and commitment to design by presenting the winners of the Lexus Design Award 2023 and their prototypes, whose concepts reflect the brand’s belief that design can contribute to positive change for the world. Now in its eleventh edition, the award celebrates, promotes and supports new creative talents from all over the world, giving them visibility in particular during Milan Design Week. This year’s winners, selected from 2,068 applications from 63 different countries, are Pavels Hedström (Sweden, moved to Denmark), Jiaming Liu (China), Temporary Office (Vincent Lai, Singapore and Douglas Lee, Canada, emigrated to the USA) and Kyeongho Park and Yejin Heo (Republic of Korea).
