A high-performance electric compact car designed to entertain those behind the wheel without burdening them with mammoth dimensions. Like the original GTI, the ID.GTI Concept follows the design and technology principle of an affordable mass-produced model. In figures, the ID.GTI Concept is as follows: it is 4,104 mm long, has a wide wheelbase of 2,600 mm and large 20-inch alloy wheels with 245/35 high-performance tyres. All this is accompanied by very short body overhangs. The GTI is 1,499 mm high and 1,840 mm wide.
The front end of the ID.GTI has some significant features typical of Volkswagen’s sporty models such as the red radiator grille surround, which in this case is almost completely closed. The line occupies the entire width of the car and the GTI lettering is also integrated into it. The C-pillar is the distinctive feature typical of the ID. 2all, of which the ID.GTI is the sporty variant. The third pillar flows into the body side to create a powerful appearance, while the straight window shoulder contributes to the car’s increased road presence. While the ID.2all concept features a horizontal bar for the headlamp, on the GTI the designers led by Andreas Mindt opted for a darker hue for this element.
The interior of the ID.GTI combines the concepts of sportiness and practicality. The three-spoke steering wheel has an airbag that sits slightly lower to create a link to the first-generation Golf GTI. Each of the two horizontal spokes of the multifunction steering wheel houses a thumbwheel and two buttons that the driver can use to control the digital instrumentation, the head-up display with augmented reality and other functions such as audio volume. Since the automatic transmission is operated via a switch on the steering column, the interior designers have relocated the classic golf ball of the gear knob to the centre console. The 12.9-inch touch display of the infotainment system is already almost what we will find in production. The same goes for the air-conditioning unit, below the display, whose main functions are controlled via illuminated buttons.
