After coming back to prominence with the A110, Alpine is now preparing to turn over a new leaf entirely and transform itself into an all-electric, higher-volume brand, thanks to a more articulated range than in the past. The first model in this new direction is the A290, a zero-emission compact car with a sporty character derived from Renault’s R5. The proportions remain similar, but the length (3.99 meters) increases due to more pronounced bumpers and the width grows by 6 centimeters due to widened track widths.
“The A290 represents the entry model to the Alpine range, as well as the first electric car in the brand’s history,” explains Antony Villain, design director of the Dieppe-based brand. “With it, we are not inaugurating a new stylistic course but, starting with the R5, we are trying to give a new interpretation to the elements that have always characterized Alpine. Above all, the split front headlights with an X-shaped daytime running light that hints at the world of racing. The distinctive molding on the rear doors, on the other hand, pays homage to the Renault 5 Maxi Turbo. Otherwise, added sportiness is provided by the enlarged front air intakes and a new rear diffuser. There is also a hint of a spoiler positioned in the center of the tailgate”.
But working on an electric model brings with it several difficulties, dictated by the need to respect certain technical constraints, especially regarding aerodynamics. “For this reason, we gave up a wing, while in the front we had to design specific openings to channel the flows toward the sides and thus fairing the wheel arches. In addition, we had to add small appendages in front of the front wheel arches and behind the rear ones, again with a view to improving the car’s Cd” Inevitable then for Alpine is the snowflake theme that, as Villain explains, returns in several elements of the car: in front, in the grille of the central air intake, as in the 19-inch alloy wheels.
A lot of work has also been done inside the cabin. “There are two elements we wanted to express: sportiness and exclusivity,” says Villain. “As for the former, we chose an ergonomic steering wheel on which the main vehicle dynamics control instruments find their place, and new seats that ensure excellent restraint. As for exclusivity, we have done in-depth work on materials and color combinations, opting for soft-touch upholstery and colors that echo the brand’s heritage.”
The result, indeed, is first-rate. Stepping aboard, one notices the high level of perceived quality. The car has a premium feel, emphasized by the excellent user experience conveyed by the infotainment system, with a central touchscreen with revised graphics and equipped with brand-new functions for powertrain management. This consists of a 52-kWh battery that powers a 180- or 220-hp electric motor, depending on the version. With the more powerful unit, the Alpine A290 feels fast and engaging, although it does not aim to be a thoroughbred sports car. It comes across more as an everyday electric, with a strong focus on style and the ability, if desired, to deliver a few smiles on a curvy road.
