With the BMW iX Flow in collaboration with E Ink, unveiled at CES 2022, the Munich-based premium carmaker is offering the prospect of innovative technology that uses digitalisation to adapt even the exterior of the vehicle to individual preferences. The surface of the iX Flow, developed in collaboration with E Ink, can change colour at the request of the driver. Colour changes are possible thanks to a coating specially developed for the iX bodywork.
Electrophoretic technology brings different colour pigments to the surface when triggered by an electrical impulse, causing the car to take on the desired colour. “The BMW iX Flow is an advanced research and design project and a great example of the future-oriented thinking for which BMW is known,” says Adrian van Hooydonk, Head of BMW Group design.
Innovative E Ink technology thus opens up new avenues for changes to vehicle appearance based on the driver’s aesthetic preferences, environmental conditions or even functional requirements. The technology thus offers an unprecedented opportunity to personalise exterior design. today, the colour chosen for the car is an expression of the driver’s personality. In this way, you can choose to make your exterior look wilder, more expressive, extravagant or sporty, but also more restrained, subtle or elegant. Each year, new versions are added that reflect the characteristics of the model in question and allow the brand to continue to set trends in exterior design.
