The minimalist design and all-electric powertrain of the Mini Cooper are designed for maximum urban driving fun. This is the new Mini: there are very few examples of models that have managed to combine their history and tradition with progress and innovation. “Inspired by our history, we have developed a new design language that defines our DNA. We have called it Charismatic Simplicity: the idea is for a design that gives each new Mini model a strong, individual character and is characterised by a simple, minimalist design language that intuitively focuses on the essential elements of the brand,” says Oliver Heilmer, head of Mini design.
The agile and compact silhouette features typical Mini proportions: the short overhangs, bonnet and contrast between the long wheelbase and large wheels give the fifth-generation model charisma and presence on the road, emphasising a certain dynamic expression. Details such as recessed door handles, the absence of mudguards and classic side scuttles take the model into the future. This reduction to the essentials further emphasises the two-tone bodywork paintwork: typical Mini design features such as the three-part visual division of the bodywork, the window area and the contrasting roof have a greater impact, making the new design language more effective.
Inside, the front area echoes the famous minimalist design of the classic Mini. For the first 1959 model, Mini inventor Alec Issigonis designed a cockpit with a round instrument panel in the centre and the characteristic toggle bar at the bottom. The large, curved dashboard features fabric surfaces for the first time. Warm and pleasant materials characterise the new homely atmosphere of the Mini Cooper’s cabin. A specially developed manufacturing process is used to create the versatile and easy-care fabric structure in two-tone design made of recycled polyester. There is a choice of different colours for the fabric surfaces and seats depending on the trim selected. To make the dashboard as slim and spacious as possible, the air vents are very flat.
