With the world premiere of the ID. Code, Volkswagen shows in the new design language of future models. The concept car was developed especially for the Chinese market and its powerful, clear and flowing surfaces denote a body somewhere between a GT and an SUV. In the ID. Code, the real and virtual worlds meet to create a new mobility experience. The electric concept car can be driven in conventional or level 4 autonomous driving mode.
Designed by the design team led by Andrea Mindt, the ID. Code anticipates the lines and contents of 16 new models in Volkswagen’s ID family of electric vehicles that will arrive by 2030. These include five zero-emission vehicles of the new ID.UX sub-brand that will celebrate their market debut by 2027. Volkswagen is using the already well-known MQB and MEB architectures and will add new local platforms in China, for example through partnerships such as the collaboration with the XPENG brand. In addition, Volkswagen China Technology Company (VCTC), based in Hefei, is developing the group’s first electric platform specifically for China.
The interior has been designed as a highly connective lounge. Their equipment makes the journey more enjoyable and comfortable, while the materials are of high quality and sustainable. The designers have also worked on the infotainment system, which has been completely redesigned. There is also an on-board avatar that accompanies the driver and passengers inside the passenger compartment and assists them in managing all vehicle functions. The arrangement of the seats changes depending on the driving mode chosen: if level 4 autonomous driving is used, the steering wheel retracts into the cockpit, creating additional space to rotate the front seats by 180 degrees, so that members of a family can, for example, sit facing each other, facilitating communication.
