Most frequently, manufacturers choose for new models names recovered by the past, even if there is no obvious connection between the cars that carry them, for a simple marketing strategy. However, this is not the case of new Frontera: this 4,4 meters long B-SUV that Opel has just presented as a replacement for the previous Crossland, is inspired from the famous off-road vehicle of the 90s. That is clearly present in the stylistic development, resulting in a precise connotation for a model born on a flexible platform, very exploited inside the Stellantis group. It is not an off-road vehicle in the most classic sense of the term, but according to the team at the Rüsselsheim Design Center the definition of “urban SUV” is not completely adequate for it. Its style was inspired more by the adventurous personality of the original Frontera more than by its design elements, but it takes the “Bold and Pure” philosophy in a new direction.
Extremely practical, with truly remarkable internal space (have 460 liter for luggage) and many storage solutions, it can support a load of over 200 kg on the roof, which makes it possible to fit a camp tent. Shapes and surfaces aim to give an idea of solidity: the belt line is apparently high, with reduced glass surface, but here too the designers assure that on the contrary, they have worked to minimize blind spots while maintaining the sensation of being on a robust car. The front is characterized by the Vizor, the black grille that integrates the logo and headlights, although in a simpler guise than the “digital” one of Grandland.
As on the latter there are fake intakes air which are actually functional elements for the style, to underline its “presence” on the road by emphasizing the width, and for the aerodynamics, which is especially useful for the electric version which will not have any particular elements to distinguish it from the others. Furthermore, the chrome elements disappears completely: the task of livening up and embellishing the aesthetics falls to the combinations of colors and inserts in glossy black. The interior features seats and upholstery in ecological materials and a horizontal dashboard with a 10″ instrument display and simple “Detox” style graphics. Furthermore, we find a central display of the same size which on the basic versions will be replaced by a smartphone support.
