MG, the historic British brand now controlled by the Chinese SAIC, has renewed two of the most decisive models for its return to the market. These are the HS medium SUV and the ZS compact SUV, a real best seller, two cars that have certainly had competitive prices and availability among the reasons for their success, but which have also convinced for quality and design, now even further implemented.
HS aims higher
The medium-size SUV HS, offered with a petrol or hybrid engine, has also undergone many developments that have also refined its behaviour, which is now decidedly closer to European tastes. It has grown by 60 mm in length, rising to 4.66 meters, and by 47 mm in the wheelbase that is almost 2.77 meters, and the lines become more sporty. Once again the source of inspiration is the design of the MG3. The grille has changed shape and “detaches” itself from the headlights, which are new and full LED, joined by a connecting element with a chrome profile. Similarly, at the rear there is a more inclined rear window and LED light clusters inspired by the shapes of the London building The Shard, also joined by a transverse element that visually lowers the whole. Finally, in the interior, we also find a digital panel in which the two 12.3” displays for instruments and infotainment are placed side by side. The tunnel, the gear selector, now smaller in size, and the seats, with a new, more ergonomic covering, have been redesigned.
ZS, inspired by MG3
Completely new, the second generation of the ZS SUV takes more than one cue from the latest addition to the brand, the MG3 utility vehicle. Not only does it propose the same hybrid engine, but like this it repositions itself within its segment with larger dimensions and spaces and a more modern line. ZS now boasts a length of 4.43 meters, about 11 cm more, while width and height, 1.81 and 1.63 meters respectively, have grown by about 10 and 15 mm.
The familiar line and proportions have not been overturned, but the design adopts the new family feeling inaugurated with MG4 and MG3, with a lower and sharper front in which there is still room for a large grille flanked by the characteristic vertical “fenders” with a sporty tone. The headlights, which are LED on the top of the range trim, feature a chrome element and are joined by a profile with the same finish. There are also new features in the interiors, which are even more spacious and accessible in the rear thanks to the 30 mm longer wheelbase. The newly designed dashboard houses a 7” instrument display flanked by two other digital indicators and a large central 10.25” or 12.30” touch screen depending on the version. In addition, the storage compartments have been expanded.
