A new family of compact vehicles will expand the range of American electric car manufacturer Rivian. The debutants are called R2 and R3 and are built on a new platform dedicated to mid-size models. The R2 is an SUV that offers a combination of performance, capability and utility in a five-seat package optimised for big adventures and everyday use. The vehicle’s silhouette is boxy and modern, resolutely Rivian. The electric rear window retracts fully into the tailgate to facilitate the transport of various types of equipment. The interior is rational and tech, designed to be practical while using sustainable, easy-to-clean materials. Speaking of practical, the seats in the first and second rows fold down completely, for storing equipment, goods and even camping in the car.

The second model unveiled by Rivian is the R3, a mid-size crossover that is claimed to offer great performance in terms of off-road capability, passenger comfort and storage space. Its square and rational lines are reminiscent of those of the first generation Volkswagen Golf, designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro. The R3X, the third model, is a high-performance variant of the R3 and offers even more dynamic capabilities both on and off-road. The R3’s exterior and interior design is inviting and iconic, and shows the multi-faceted nature of the Rivian brand applied to different forms, while still being instantly recognisable.

The R2 and R3 will have two battery sizes. The larger battery pack will achieve a range of more than 480 kilometres on a single charge and offer acceleration from 0 to 100 kilometres per hour in less than three seconds in the configuration with the more powerful engine.
