With the new ID. Polo, Volkswagen is bringing more affordable electric mobility to the road. It is the seventh generation of a bestseller with over 20 million units sold, but this time in a completely new, all-electric version. The ID. Polo is based on the latest evolution of the modular electric platform: the MEB+. The new ID. Polo is the first production model to follow the principles of Volkswagen’s new “Pure Positive” design language.
Andreas Mindt, Head of Design for the Volkswagen brand and the Group, has worked with his team to create a compact car that is high-quality, timeless, and charismatic, thanks to its clean proportions, iconic design features—such as a C-pillar reminiscent of the first Golf—a front end that is decidedly appealing, and a powerful rear end. The seventh generation of the model is instantly recognizable as a Polo, yet it boasts a significantly more elegant design that reflects technological advancements.
Even from the side, the new ID. Polo is instantly recognizable as a Volkswagen compact, although, of course, neither the Volkswagen logo nor any other distinctive markings that might immediately identify the manufacturer are present in this area. Here, too, it is the Pure Positive DNA that defines the design language. It starts with clean proportions: here, the stabilizing element is provided by the straight flanks with the lines between the A-pillar and the C-pillar. For the ID. Polo and the ID. Cross, presented for the first time side-by-side in production versions, Andreas Mindt and his team have developed a completely new rear-end design for Volkswagen. The ID. Polo boasts a particularly powerful aesthetic thanks to this new design, which, with its proportions following the rules of the golden ratio, creates a very balanced division of surfaces.
The new ID. Polo offers a number of clear advantages in terms of space thanks to the particularly compact drive modules of the MEB+ platform. This gives passengers 19 mm more space than in the standard Polo, a difference that is particularly noticeable in the rear compartment. The new dashboard of the ID. Polo extends seamlessly across the width of the vehicle. The Digital Cockpit (digital instruments) and the infotainment display are arranged along a single visual axis. The Digital Cockpit, with a diagonal of 26.0 cm (10 inches), features brilliant graphics. If the driver activates the retro display using the View button on the steering wheel, the Digital Cockpit displays the instruments from an old Golf I. In this case, a classic speedometer appears on the left, and a stylized tachometer on the right. In the ID. Polo, however, the latter does not indicate engine speed, but rather displays the power delivered to or drawn by the drive system (in the form of a power meter).
