“It is an exercise from 50 years ago, but if I look at it today it is still modern and harmonious. Apart from the dimensions, which have grown considerably in five decades, this model is still up-to-date”. This is how Giorgetto Giugiaro describes the Hyundai Pony Coupé, a concept car presented at the Turin Motor Show in 1974, which has been lost, and which the Korean manufacturer asked GFG Style of Giorgetto and Fabrizio Giugiaro to faithfully reconstruct, using the same methodology as at the time: pencil, “piano di forma” and hand-hammering of the aluminium plates.

Hyundai unveiled the reconstructed Pony Coupe Concept at the Hyundai Reunion event on Lake Como (Italy), a brand platform that serves as a meeting point between the past and the vision of the future. Giorgetto and Fabrizio Giugiaro also attended the presentation of the project, which was announced last November. “The reconstruction of this unique vehicle is an important moment in Hyundai’s history. It tells of our beginnings and our commitment to the future. It is a legacy for generations to come. It ideally symbolises the baton that binds the company’s past and future,” said Luc Donckerwolke, President and Chief Creative Officer of Hyundai Motor Group.

“Pony Coupe Concept reflects the company’s gratitude and dedication to the spirit of challenge that Hyundai employees had in 1974,” said SangYup Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of Hyundai Motor Design Center. “The rebirth of the Pony Coupe Concept is a historic moment for Hyundai, as it represents not only our beginnings, but also our commitment to the future with new dreams to be realised.”
