Frank Heyl is the new Bugatti Director of Design. Achim Anscheidt has retired from this role, bringing an end to 19 years of his personal oversight of the stylistic evolution of the Bugatti brand. Anscheidt will remain a senior advisor to Bugatti Rimac CEO, Mate Rimac, as the brand prepares to unveil the new hybridized Chiron successor.

Heyl, 44, graduated in Vehicle Design from London’s Royal College of Art and worked for several manufacturers before starting his career at Bugatti in 2008. At Bugatti he participated in the design of vehicles such as the Veyron Supersport, the Vision Gran Turismo, the Chiron and the Divo. In 2014 he was appointed head of exterior design and in 2019 he was promoted to deputy director of design.

Anscheidt began his career after being a motorcycle acrobat until he was in his twenties. He eventually combined the two at ACCD Pasadena, graduating in 1993 and taking on a junior design role at Porsche Design Weissach. Three years later, he was chosen to head the Volkswagen Group’s advanced design operations in Barcelona and Berlin, at a time when Bugatti was also under ownership by the VW Group. In 2004 Anscheidt became Design Director of Bugatti, when the design of the Veyron had been largely finalized but it was necessary to undertake a rapid stylistic development of the product portfolio. Under Anscheidt’s leadership, models such as the Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse and Veyron Super Sport become performance icons. And with special edition models such as the innovative Veyron L’Or Blanc with porcelain appliqués, the Veyron Edition Hermès and the Legend Editions, Anscheidt and Bugatti have experimented with new levels of bespoke craftsmanship.
