Callum, the brand of designer Ian Callum, unveiled Skye, an all-terrain electric vehicle (full design story with interview with Ian Callum in Auto&Design no. 264 January/February 2024). Skye is the first vehicle to use the company’s brand and was conceived, designed and engineered entirely in-house. “At four metres long, the Skye has remarkable proportions with an essential aesthetic. It has been designed to exceed expectations: it is usable in unusual conditions and unleashes an absolute joy to drive,” explains Ian Callum, head of design and founder of Callum.
Its sophisticated design language translates into an imposing and elegant sculpted form, focusing on its robust practical capabilities and off-road capabilities. “The exterior is characterised by an impressive curve intersected by a strong horizontal structure, flanked by organic shapes at the front and rear. At the centre is performance, style, capability and a design that is integral to the engineering elements.”
Meticulously designed and engineered to be exhilarating and rewarding on the road, the Skye has four-wheel drive for unique off-road capabilities. At 4 metres long and 1.9 metres wide, the car has a sturdy space frame chassis with off-road suspension that provides adequate ground clearance, as well as comfort and compliance on a variety of terrains. The 42 kWh lithium-ion battery provides an expected range of 430 kilometres, with the ability to recharge the battery in ultra-rapid mode in about 10 minutes. With a dry weight of 1,150 kg and an impeccably balanced 50/50 weight distribution, the Skye accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in less than four seconds.
