Taking a myth from the past and giving it a new life, respecting its values. This is the mission that every designer espouses when tackling a restomod, and this is what happened for Tredieci, a project by Erre Design Studio, the ideas workshop of Erre Company, a Turin-based company founded in 2013 that provides engineering consultancy, Concept Design, HMI, UX/UI, Prototyping, Electric & Electronic and ICT. ERRE Design Studio, the ‘sartorial’ workshop made up of a team of around twenty designers from all over the world and led by Hernan Charalambopoulos, proposes the Tredieci concept car, created with the aim of reviving the passion for the automobile by bringing back its true substance, and adding renewed and contemporary technical content.
The ERRE Design Studio team chose to work on a car with a very characterised and defined shape. The Renault A310, while re-proposing angular lines typical of those years, stood out from the classic cars of the Seventies. Unprecedented proportions, overlapping trapezoids and a certain rawness in fitting the volumes together make this car, even today, a true cult object. “We set out to develop this concept car,” says Rosario Radice, Founder and CEO of ERRE Company, “because we have a passion for glamour and a strong team of designers, supported by more than 100 engineers and technicians, ready to respond to the development needs of such a complex project.
Just as when an architect decides to renovate an old house and modernise it without touching its original structure and spirit, ERRE Design Studio has sought the same compromise between past and present, merging an iconic image with a fresh, contemporary proposal. The result is a heartfelt homage to a car that has made entire generations dream and that, over the years, has always remained in the emotional memory. “Having the chance to intervene as professionals on objects so strongly linked to everyone’s early dreams,” says Hernan Charalambopoulos, Design Director ERRE Design Studio, “is an experience that every car designer should be able to have as part of their career.
Tredieci (4.15 metres long, 1.76 metres wide and 1.1 metres high) is an electric concept with a totally sporty set-up, as can be seen from the track widened compared to the original (+130 mm) and the oversized wheels (19 inches). The concept is characterised by the division into two blocks, of different widths, one on top of the other, echoing a feature of the original car by emphasising the position of the wheels, which occupy an outermost position. The result is a sculptural piece of work, with a strong and distinctive aesthetic imprint that contributes to conveying a feeling of power and safety on the road.
