The BorromeodeSilva design studio, which specialises in automotive design and restomods, has released the first digital images of the STL-1 based on the Mustang, the iconic American muscle car that still conjures up dreams of adventurous journeys through sun-drenched trails and paved arteries. After all, like all restomods, the STL-1 was born from an experience or a memory of the past linked to a vehicle no longer in production but still capable of arousing strong emotions and that touch of nostalgia that makes everything more authentic. For this reason, it required a long and painstaking design and engineering study with the sole objective of emphasising the character and stylistic features of the original model, preserving its iconicity and using state-of-the-art solutions and high-quality finishes. In the case of the STL-1, the donor car is the ’68 Fastback version, one of the most representative models of the Mustang’s identity.

The BorromeodeSilva studio has therefore completely revised and modernised America’s most famous muscle car, both aesthetically and mechanically, emphasising its strong personality and giving it an even more adventurous look. In terms of design, the first feature of the STL-1 that leaps to the eye is the lack of a roof, which has been replaced by a hand-built tubular cage tracing the lines of the Mustang Fastback. Looking through the tubes, one appreciates a very basic, yet carefully detailed interior that includes a brand new digital dashboard, a sports steering wheel, new seats and a host of small details just waiting to be discovered. It should be noted that the body of the new vehicle is made from scratch from special automotive grade steel for a stronger structure than the original, while retaining the exact shape.

In side view, then, there is greater ground clearance, provided by a completely revised underbody, complete with independent suspension, inboard brakes, a new differential and a new, performance drive shaft. In addition, aggressive all-terrain tyres wrap around a set of iconic Turbine wheels. The lines of the original model have remained largely intact, but a few details aimed at enhancing the STL1’s appearance and off-road capabilities are noticeable, such as a reworked front bumper, complete with a set of rally-style fog lamps, a substantial crankcase guard and a slimmer rear end, in order to gain a few extra centimetres of ground clearance.
