In the 1980s, the arrival of Group B brought momentous change to the world of rallying. 1982, in fact, saw the start of a veritable cult era for motorsports and, albeit short-lived, remains in the memory along with a host of iconic cars, symbols of a deep passion for motorsports. Among the most significant cars of that period was the MG Metro 6R4, which raced in the legendary Group B of the World Rally Championship between 1985 and 1986, exciting millions of fans worldwide.

MG EX4

A 100% electric concept car
It is to pay tribute to this car – in the year of its 40th anniversary – and at the same time kick off the MG brand centenary celebrations that will culminate in 2024, that the design team of the SAIC Design Advanced Studio in London has set out to create a 100% electric concept car, the MG EX4. A car capable of reviving the spirit and style of the legendary Metro 6R4 while embodying the core strengths of the brand (now part of the SAIC group) such as the integration of innovative and avant-garde technologies, the relentless pursuit of performance and captivating design.

The centenary celebrations
The project got underway in 2022, at a time when the brand was considering how to launch MG’s centenary celebrations; the success of the MG4 – following its launch in the UK and European markets – had prompted the development and introduction of the MG4 XPOWER, a 4WD and 440 kWh performance variant of the popular electric saloon.

Retro-inspired livery
The EX4 is attractive and racy, featuring a distinctive retro-inspired livery designed especially for the Goodwood Speed Festival, where it was unveiled to the public last August. The design recalls elements of the 6R4, in particular the lower front spoiler and rear wing, which radically transform the look and character of the basic MG4.

Goodwood “Hill” simulator
The design team also created a driving simulator of the famous Goodwood ‘Hill’ where visitors to the MG stand at the Speed Festival could enjoy a virtual drive of the EX4.

MG EX4

First electric super sports car
“MG is experiencing something of a renaissance following the launch of the MG Cyberster, the success of the MG4 and the presentation of the EX4 hatchback, the brand’s first electric super sports car in 20 years. We are highly motivated to move forward with this exciting brand, which has evolved by carrying with it the spirit of its rich history. We will continue to bring MG’s values to the forefront as it blazes a trail through the 21st century”, commented Carl Gotham, director of the SAIC Advanced Design studio in London.
