Renault has unveiled the first renderings of its new concept car that will be officially unveiled on 22 September, to be shown at the Chantilly Arts & Elegance Richard Mille (24 and 25 September), and to be displayed from 17 October at the Paris Motor Show 2022. Judging by the images, it seems that the design team led by Gilles Vidal has prepared a futuristic prototype to pay homage to the Renault 5 Turbo of the 1980s designed by Marcello Gandini.
“As part of the R5’s 50th anniversary celebrations, the new showcar will be a contemporary homage to its most legendary sports versions,” the French manufacturer said in a statement. The Renault 5 Turbo was produced between 1980 and 1985 and designed to be used in rally competitions, competing and winning some World Rally Championship rounds between 1981 and 1986. The concept car envisages an electric and even more extreme reinterpretation of it with a huge rear wing, very wide tracks and widespread use of LEDs. The front, for example, is defined by a band of full-width horizontal LEDs placed higher up than four squared-off headlights.
