Here the watchword is quality. The aim of the Chinese Roewe (SAIC Group) brand in its design of the D7 electric saloon was to offer its customers refinement accompanied by impressive performance and top-notch craftsmanship. The design team led by Shao Jingfeng went for technological elegance, the brand’s fresh design philosophy that aims to blend classic lines and minimal edges with layers of innovation.

The first move on the board involved the proportions. The designers’ idea was to create a comfortable, highly aerodynamic saloon with a commanding road presence and some serious personality features. What they came up with was a length of 4.8 metres and a wheelbase of 2.8 metres with trimmed-down overhangs and plenty of space for occupants and batteries tucked under the floor.

The smoothly flowing silhouette and the styling elements deliver a balanced appearance, while the downward-sloping front end and aerodynamic roof create a streamlined overall look that conveys a sense of composure and agility. The profile is defined by the roofline that starts at the front and runs seamlessly to the rear, giving the D7 an almost coupé-like appearance. All these elements feed into the aerodynamics (the drag coefficient is 0.23) and the 18-inch wheels also contribute to efficiency with their radial themed design and openings reduced to a minimum.

For the rear, the designers have gone for a ‘duck tail’ shape, which benefits both aerodynamics and style: saloons with a tapered rear have always topped the popularity ratings. Overall, the exterior design is pure: most volumes are rounded and the corners are smoothed to give a greater sense of unity and leave no room for unnecessary frills that would jeopardise both the model’s elegance and its functionality in terms of aerodynamics.

The design of the Roewe D7 pivots around four key design principles. “Elegant” is the DNA of Roewe brand design heritage. “Steady” is the constant evolution in line with future design trends while remaining true to its roots. “Pure” is the offering of a complete, coherent sensory experience, also represents nature at its most harmonious and friendly for chilling out and peace of mind. Finally, “Refined” implies deep contemplation, intelligent design and captivating experiences.
